astor chalk

I was lucky enough to take part in this years chalk mural competition put on by the City of Stirling. The theme for this years competition was “A Night at the Movies”. I chose to illustrate a couple out together at the Astor Theatre, I wanted to avoid depicting a “Marilyn Monroe hanging out with James Dean” scene, which I really can’t stand.

It was the first time I’d worked in chalk in this way (the blackboard at work is a quite different), so it was a huge learning experience. Note for next time: bring sponges, and a ton more chalk. That stuff just evaporates!

Here’s an illustration I did to include in my portfolio. The characters are all from Home Time, although I’m not sure that this scene will actually occur in the narrative.

They’re all off! A great big stack of illustration portfolios sent out to my favorite publishers in Australia.
Many thanks to Liz for helping me put them together and getting them to the post office.

Now, we wait, with fingers crossed…

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

Posted by campbell January 23rd, 2011

A new illustration in the Snow White series. Snow is found, fast asleep in one of the seven dwarves beds.

I had been thumbing through a great book on minerals, crystals and meteors when thinking of this project, so I drew heavily from those shapes, colours and textures. The dwarves in this retelling are living rocks, expert miners and weapon smiths. They run a lucrative operation crafting the finest armor and weapons for kingdoms and warlords.

It would be fun to put this together as an illustrated book. One full page illustration for a full page of text.
We can dream.
