Avengers Assembled

avengers assembled

Here’s my final Avengers redesign, the Hulk.

I always liked the more brutish, animalistic and terrifying Hulks, to the handsome ‘perfect beast’ variants. This version of the hulk undergoes unpredictable mutations when transforming, twisting his biology and activating recessive and junk DNA. I imagine this would make him even more terrifying to his team mates.

I also really like the idea of his size growing relative to his anger, so his mutations become even more wild as he gets bigger.

This way he also fills the role of the “giant” within the team.

So there’s my Avengers Assembled.

iron man

My redesign of Iron Man.

It’s interesting how antiquated the Iron Man suits are in his films and the Avengers. I know the comics have pushed through the traditional notion of a man in a tin suit, to nanobots in his blood stream and cool stuff like that, which I’m totally all for.

My version of Iron Man has a liquid metal suit that resides within his hollowed chest while not in use. When activated, it empties that diamond carved space, covering his body and leaving a hollow tunnel through his core.

I imagine that his costume, when covering him would provide a lot more neck support for flight. As well as sculpting a more idealised and intimidating form than Tony would normally have.

I just finished watching Inception and kept waiting for Jareth to be waiting at the bottom of the dream, singing and dancing around.

This was done in the style of my 8 Bit Dreams series which will be showing at the Light Grey Art Lab on Sep20th.

Captain America

My redesign of Captain America.
I’m a big fan of the scale mail on classic Cap, but as a whole, I think he’s a pretty awful costume design. I think those super patriot flag costumes always look really cheesy in the worst possible way. I tried to strike a balance between him being a superhero, and a soldier, with those elements kind of nestling amongst one another. He’s really a soldier first, who just happens to be super. They army dress him up a bit silly to boost morale and scare off the enemy.

I imagine he’d be keen to use all of his familiar weapons from the war, although I imagine Tony Stark would give them a good seeings to, so they could actually contend with the challenges of the 21st century.

campbell whyte thor

I recently watched all the Marvel universe films in pretty quick succession, so I have those ridiculous things on my brain. This is my redesign of Thor. It’s not really meant to be for the screen, more the page. I wanted Thor to be more mystical, cosmic and a little bit scary.

The trimming of his cape is made of clouds, the lining, and his visible body is a cosmic projection, his eyes are stars, A mane of golden hair swirls constantly and his face, too beautiful for human eyes, is masked.

In preparing for the upcoming exhibition of 8 Bit Dreams illustrations at Light Grey Art Lab, I felt inspired to knock out a few more illustrations. This one features the star of Anita Sarkeesian’s hypothetical game The Legend of the Last Princess.

I’m a big fan of Sarkeesian’s work, and you can see the Princess excerpt from her larger Tropes Vs Women series below.
