Dungeons and Dragons

Posted by campbell May 7th, 2012

You’re all going to be listening to the greatest Dungeons and Dragons game ever tonight, right? Check out the crazy action that happened last week, yea, it’s like Jersey Shore meets D&D over in our campaign. Note, that the sessions are pretty ridiculously offensive and stupid, so only listen if you have ears of steel.

You can follow the adventures at Jimmerish FM download past episodes on itunes and check out the wiki.

Dinosaur Boxes

Posted by campbell May 6th, 2012

I had this idea for cardboard boxes that have perforated patterns in them so they can pop out in to dinosaurs. They could even be scaled in size, so when you purchase them they come sat one within the other like a pixelated babushka. I should probably get a kickstarter going for this, because it’s genius.

Rattata Prints

Posted by campbell May 4th, 2012

Pokemon Battle Royale has opened in the most spectacular fashion, with 151 artists throwing their skills at 151 Pokemon. It’s fantastic to see the diversity of interpretations of Pokemon. Light Grey Art Lab has opened up their print shop, where you can purchase copies of my Rattata illustration that was done especially for the show. The prints will only be available until the 11th of May, so get in while you can.

Prints are archival quality and are a steal at only $40. You can pick one up here.

Picture Book

Posted by campbell May 2nd, 2012

Recently my dear friend Briony Stewart and I have been developing a picture book together. I can’t really talk too much about it yet, but I can’t resist showing some of the work in progress shots of the illustrations.

Over the last few years I’ve done a lot of “seeding” of projects. Planting small ideas here and there and waiting to see if they grow. This is another seed that we’re sending out, hoping it will find fertile ground and take a hold.

Workshop Treasures

Posted by campbell April 27th, 2012

I recently did a comics workshop at our local library. It was part of their school holiday programing and was a day long event. The workshop was heaps of fun, with everyone making mini comics and hanging out. It was targeted mainly at primary school age children, some had a lot of experience drawing, others were coming at it for the first time.

As a part of the “getting ideas” section of the workshop, I had everyone select a “non comics” artist to use as an inspiration. For a lot of kids that was a bit hard, so we took a walk over to the art section of the library (it’s handy doing workshops in libraries) and started grabbing books. Now most of the kids went looking for something really specific, and were able to find a book or artist that suited them, but two girls in particular weren’t so fussed.

So yes, the above comic features David Hockney. This pretty much blew my mind. The girl who pulled out his biography liked him because of his thick rimmed glasses and decided to throw him in to the comic. I don’t think she understood that I intended them to be inspired by the artwork, not include the artist. This works so much better though.

The next comic is an anthropological adventure featuring Ansel Adams, this too, blew my mind. She actually explained to me that the comic was a mashup of Ansel Adams, Party Rock Anthem and Where the Wild Things Are. Can we get this girl a contract please?

And of course, someone made a comic featuring Hitler. However, I think it is probably the best comic about Hitler ever.

Elf Comic

This is a mini comic I quickly produced for a comics workshop I did for Awesome Arts.
It all fits on an A3 sheet, which then folds down to an A5 sized comic. Older children were making and designing their own comics, but this one I made was for the little ones to colour in, with Mum and Dad helping with the dialogue (at least, that was the plan).

8 Bit (requiem for a) Dreams

Posted by campbell April 11th, 2012

They are done, and here they are. I have compiled the first years worth of 8 Bit Dreams illustrations in to one slide show, for your viewing pleasure. I mentioned in an earlier post that I have chosen to put the project on hold because I’ve been offered to opportunity to work on my graphic novel that I’ve been developing for a few years now.

When I started the 8 Bit Dreams project, I thought it would just be a small side project, that I could do without interfering with all my other work. I was very wrong. It would up consuming nearly all of my creative time during the year. Each illustration took about an hour to complete, including researching the game. Then there was scanning, cleaning up, resizing, uploading, posting, listing on etsy. All of these “little” parts add up to a lot of time.

I’d like to thank all of the people who shared my project with their friends, it’s great encouragement to see site hits rise, to see that people are paying attention. Thanks to all those who purchased work, and commissioned custom illustrations. It made it easy to justify to my family why I was doing this when money was coming in to pay the rent or buy groceries. It’s easier to take pride in your work when you can see how it is helping provide your basic needs. Thanks to my partner for putting up with me during this ridiculous endeavour, her support was invaluable.

For now, many of the illustrations are still available to purchase on my etsy store, head over there to see if the one you like is still available. The greatest thing you could do would be to share the video with friends, or purchase a work. That’d mean the world to me.

In the future, I’d love to exhibit the illustrations, so if any galleries are reading this, this might be your opportunity! Lots of people have suggested I publish them in a book, I’ve looked at print on demand options, and right now that’s not really looking too feasible an option. I might need to look in to a few different possibilities. If any publishers want to pick it up, I’d love to hear from you too.

Music for the video was provided by the wonderful Surasshu. Head over to his site for more incredible tunes.

You can follow me on twitter for even more updates, sketches and news.

Time to breathe out.

My “Game of Thrones” themed egg for the great annual egg roll. I totally got the scale wrong, should have hard boiled an ostrich egg…  I’ll post some more pictures of the egg tonight, because I’m sure you’re all dying to see it up close.
